Time to introduce Shrieking Star, one of my Bat Pony Brothers. Description and personality below, I’ll talk about the brothers’ relationship when I upload Novaerian’s pic (:
Shrieking Star is immediately recognisable by his enormous stature and distinctive colouring. He stands at least a good head above your average pony, and to accommodate this he has wings of impressive size and strength. This, along with his permanent scowl, large fangs, and clawed thumbs, make Shrieking a very intimidating figure.
With a natural wave to his mane, tail, and feathers (an unfortunate genetic from his mother's side) Shrieking habitually keeps his mane cut short.
His primary body colour is dark grey, with a darker gradient down his legs and at the tips of his ears. His mane, tail, and wings are pale silver, and his wing membrane is partially transparent and ragged along the edges. He shares his lurid purple eyes with his mother and younger brother.
On his right flank, slightly cutting into his cutiemark, Shrieking has three large scars.
Shrieking's cutiemark is a simple jagged white line that represents a high frequency reading. This symbolises his special 'talent' which is his ability to shriek at such a high pitch that is causes a severe ringing in the ears and disorientation to those around him.
Shrieking Star is a high ranking General in Luna's elite personal guard and it is a position he takes very seriously, much like everything else. He has a very strict demeanour and is infamously hard-nosed and iron-hoofed, and he will not tolerate any form of incompetency. While this makes him a respected and successful General, it has resulted in Shrieking being a solitary figure outside of his duties. There are very few people who Shrieking will tolerate for extended periods of time and in the long run he prefers his own company.
While Shrieking has a strategically brilliant mind, he has a tendency to be easily vexed and is prone to bouts of aggression. This can make him volatile, however it is very rare for Shrieking to lose control of his temper to the point he becomes unpredictable. Shrieking's strengths are close combat and his deceptively high intelligence. His cunning generally makes up for his lack of speed and aerial agility due to his size; however his size also makes him a very dangerous opponent in a fight. With plenty of brute force to throw around and very rarely showing leniency, Shrieking has been known to break a limb or two with a well-aimed strike.
Shrieking Star was the first born to his wealthy aristocratic parents. For the first 8 years of his life he spent his time mostly in his own company in his parents’ large mansion home in a quiet yet affluent province of Canterlot. Shrieking's father, Nocturne, was a soldier in Luna's personal guard and his mother, Auralis, for the most part stayed home to care for her son. Although on occasion she did play the harp at high-society events.
Having a naturally independent and detached nature from early on, Shrieking predominantly kept to his own company or that of his parents rather than foals his own age. Alongside this, Shrieking idolised his sire who, while stoic and authoritarian, was a good father who encouraged Shrieking's desire to be part of the Royal Guard, teaching him discipline, and training him from an early age and throughout his adolescence. In contrast, Auralis was a gentle free-spirit and cared for Shrieking with unrestrained love and devotion, though like Nocturne she never babied him and encouraged Shrieking's ambition and independence. Despite not expressing affection to her to a large extent, having the same reserved nature of his father, Shrieking still enjoys spending quiet evening in Auralis' company even as an adult, and she is still one of the very few who can get away with referring to him as 'Star'.
When Shrieking was 8, his world shifted to accommodate the premature birth of his sibling, and it was Novaerian's uncertain start in life that clinched Shrieking's serious and protective nature, especially over his brother. Novaerian survived, and while he remained quite slim and small in comparison to his father and brother, he and Shrieking shared a very strong bond in their youth despite the significant age gap.
It was in his young adolescence Shrieking received the prominent scars on his flank. He and a still quite frail Novaerian had been spending time in their garden behind their extensive home which bordered a forest. While dangerous creatures were unheard of in the Canterlot forest, Novaerion happened to wander too far into the trees while Shrieking was momentarily distracted, and caught the attention of a hungry lone Timber Wolf. Shrieking was almost too late to save Nova, and in his panic at being too far away, he screamed at the wolf that had Nova pinned beneath its paw. Shrieking discovered his talent then, which was his ability to screech at so high a frequency it pained and disorientated the wolf. In that moment he was able to get close enough to pull Nova away, and while he received the scars across his flank from a wildly aimed blow, he was able to escape. Nocturne arrived moments later and quickly dealt the Timber Wolf a swift death, however the experience left both brothers scarred and badly shaken.
Shrieking Star still holds a deep resentment towards Timber wolves, although it is due to the lingering trauma of almost losing Nova as opposed to any concern for his own safety or marred flank.
Despite their vastly different personalities and temperaments, Shrieking Star and Novaerian held a strong bond for many years; however it began to slowly deteriorate in the time leading up to Shrieking joining the ranks of the royal guard. Novaerian’s dislike for the guards had caused discord between the brothers in the past and so they rarely spoke about it. But Shrieking’s impending inauguration brought things to ahead which led to the brother’s first and only serious fight. While no blows were thrown, Shrieking verbally attacked Novarian’s rebellious nature, his insecurities about their father, and his physical weakness. While he badly regretted his words after calming down, for a long time they did not speak to each other, and the loss of his brother and the guilt he silently carried made Shrieking’s time in the guards for that period stressful and tumultuous. After an agonising two years of tense silence, Shrieking took the initiative as the older brother and made an attempt to bridge the gap between them.
Some years on, there is hope for their bond to be what it once was. While they never verbally acknowledge the fight or anything that was said, they continue to apologise for the slights in small ways, to the point Novaerian attended Shrieking’s ceremony when he promoted to General of Princess Luna’s Personal Guard.
